If you're not getting BluRay, get this DVD player,

You cannot ask for more when it comes to ease of use, quality, and sleek looking components. This new Sony DVD player is great for the price.
Plays any format!,
by Vikingbrewer, 2009-11-29
I had to do a lot of detailed research to find an updscaling DVD player that will play DVD+ and DVD- R/RW and Dual Layer DVD + and - formats at this reasonable price. Many cheaper models will only play one format (only + discs) and most do not play DVD DL discs. In my work as an A/V specialist I am using all types of DVD media so a player that can read them all was a must!
The picture quality is great with the HDMI output, and it reads scratched discs pretty well too.
Works Very Well - Just Make Sure and Use a HDMI Cable,
by Alex Dodd, 2009-09-27
I was surprised by the picture quality that this unit produced from regular DVDs. It is far superior to my old Samsung DVD player, and is near-broadcast HD quality picture. It, of course, is not as good as a Blu-Ray player, but I feel it is a better value since the player is cheaper, and you do not have to make any changes to your current DVD library, or pay the higher price for Blu-Ray discs. This guy has been able to play all DVDs I have burned with my computer (I have used Roxio Toast, Mac OS X Disk Utility, and DVD2OneX2 for Mac to burn my DVDs-all programs work with this player).
Like other reviewers (And the specs) state, it is important that you use a HDMI cable to connect this player to your TV as the upconverting only works via that interface. I feel this is a small caveat for excellent picture quality.
Overall, this player is an excellent value, and once again, has shown yet another reason NOT to upgrade to Blu-Ray (yet, at least).
The DVD player just works,
by John Dawson, 2009-11-06
Mine was painless to set up. I use it with a Sony SXRD A2000 TV set, which is 1080p. The DVD player was configured out of the box to send the proper 16:9 1080p signal to my TV set. I didn't have to program anything or dig around in manuals. The DVD remote has TV power and volume buttons; it worked out of the box with my TV, with no programming (guess that's the benefit of having same brand). All can say is, it just worked.
How about picture quality? Well. My old Oppo brand DVD player (now broken) was fancier and more expensive. Perhaps if I could compare still frames of the two players or something I could tell the difference. But as it stands, I don't notice a difference versus the old player. It was going to cost more to fix my old player than to buy this one. So I bought this one. It was the right choice.
The disc memory feature is great. I watch part of a DVD now, then tomorrow my kid watches his DVD, and later on I put my disc back in, and presto, it resumes where it left off. I can't believe I lived without this feature.
People Please MOVE and MOVE FORWARD!!!!!,

This is one awesome DVD player that could save you hundreds of dollars easily. For one, most of my DVD titles are art house and classical music, and it's wishful thinking to expect them to be released on BlueRay. Having the upscaling is just awesome.
And most of us could also save $$$$$$ by not jumping into the BlueRay bandwagon yet. No need to dump all your existing DVDs for BlueRay, nor rush to buy new BlueRay titles. This DVD player gives like 85%-90% of BlueRay if you use HDMI interface.

Now for people who give 1 or 2 stars and moan about lack of this, lack of that, steps backward, etc. You are the one stepping backward and not moving, not Sony.
1) No, this DVD player does not have the eject button. What does it hurt you? Yea so you eject the DVD tray with that button, so what? You think you don't need to get up from your chair, walk to the DVD player, and swap the disc by yourself in front of the player? Come on, WALK! None of us wanna be the fat pears in Wall*E, right?
2) No, this player doesn't have S-video output. Big deal. Why on earth would one buy an upscaling DVD player if you use nothing less than the HDMI interface?
3) No, this player doesn't come with Toslink Optical neither. Toslink is such a low quality digital interface, it's like the old 75ohm coax cable from cable TV. So before you moan about Sony stepping backward of not having it, why don't you ask yourself whether it's your equipment which is obsolete technology that does NOT move forward.
Seriously, you don't really need an upscaling DVD player unless you have high quality HDTVs (please skip all those AOC, Envision, Vizio, Magnavox, Polaroid, RCA junk) that are at least 32 inches big. You should have buy an equal high quality home theater systems to match. And if you do have one, why would you use Toslink Optical????
It's like daylight stealing when Amazon sells this superb DVD player for so less. I don't see how one could expect more obsolete technologies to come with it at this price.
