Customer Reviews
Beware Comcast Customers,
by Robert J Denk, 2010-09-06
I couldn't rate this product properly thanks to Comcast. When the tuner wasn't picking up all the channels, we were referred to a local Magnavox repairman by Magnavox's Customer Service department. The repairman informed us that since Comcast scrambled most of their channels so only their equipment and Tivo would work, there was no way to use this DVR on our cable system. We then did some more refined Internet searches to see if anyone had been able to do a workaround, but no one has succeeded. Amazon accepted the return with absolutely no problems with a prepaid shipping label and we ended up having to rent a DVR from Comcast.
What channels it did pick up seemed to record as advertised, so it would probably be fine if it's compatible with your TV signal provider.
Absolutely Great Machine,
by Neil D., 2010-09-03
I just got my new Magnavox (Funai) MDR513H/F7 installed in my home and it is nothing short of great. A particularly great quality is that usage-wise, it is a near-mirror image of the Philips DVDR3576H which I also own. This new Magnavox with it's large HDD will ultimately replace the Philips machine and the fact that the two are functionally near-identical is going to make the transition easy.
I own two of the Philips DVDR3575H, both with inherent defective digital tuners, and the 3576H which has been superb. These type machines are a perfect replacement for the VCR and are both the Philips and the Magnavox products are wonderfully easy to use, including editing.
These are not HD machines but I only need a successor to VCR's for recording and editing off-air and DishNet SD broadcasts. If I needed to watch HD I'd buy an HD player but I have no need of that at this point in my life.
Only time will tell if this product holds up quality-wise but the Philips 3576H predecessor from Funai has been problem-free for me for over a year. I see no reason for this Magnavox (also by Funai) to be otherwise.
I expect to buy one more of these as a spare in case Funai decides to stop making them as they did the Philps line. I was extremely distressed for a while when I could not find any DVDR with HDD on the market and was resigned to having to try to get a very good PC to try to use as a poor substitute. I was elated when I found this Magnavox product and even happier to find it was a ready successor to the Philips product.
These are basic machines which are very user-friendly. Editing to delete unwanted material from recordings or to split material into multiple titles is a piece of cake and the results are excellent. Someone seeking more sophisticated editing capability might be disappointed but these serve my home needs perfectly. While they can split titles, they cannot join titles which is about the ONLY task I wish they might be able to the but that need is very rare. Editing the beginning and ends of recording and eliminating unwanted content such as commercials or anything else is a piece of cake.
This is additionally very useful for downloading and editing video from my SD video cameras. It lacks the USB input which the Philips had but I never used that anyway so I don't miss it. The DV or composite inputs work great for my needs.
I would strongly recommend this product to anyone seeking a good successor to the VCR who is only interested in working with SD video. Five bright stars overall.
Great way to record your shows at a great price,

Great dvd player and recorder at a super low price. Very easy to use for recording TV programs. You can record many hours of shows on the hard drive. Love it!

We bought this recorder a couple of weeks ago, and so far everything is working good.
Terrific Recorder,
by Lawrence L. Smith, 2010-08-20
This is the best DVD recorder I've had. It even has features I haven't used, such as freezing live TV. It makes great recordings. I usually record onto DVDs but there are times when there are two or three programs in succession, I record to the hard drive for those. I can either watch them from the hard drive or transfer them later to a DVD. I usually transfer my HDD recordings to a DVD because I usually watch TV on a big screen and home theatre sound system a Blu-Ray player. The recordings play better than any made on my two previous recorders. I'd happily recommend it to a friend.
